In the modern chemical processing and petroleum refining industries, the solidification of molten waxes—specifically paraffin and Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) wax—represents a critical phase in the production supply chain. Paraffin wax, derived from petroleum refining, and AKD wax, widely utilized as an alkaline sizing agent in the paper manufacturing sector, both require transition from a liquid state at elevated temperatures to a stable, solid, and transportable form.
Historically, the solidification process has been plagued by operational inefficiencies, including high energy consumption, uneven product quality, product contamination, and intensive labor requirements. As global demand for high-purity waxes escalates, manufacturers are shifting away from primitive cooling methods toward automated, continuous, and highly cost-effective cooling solutions. These modern systems optimize heat transfer, ensure consistent product dimensions, and minimize environmental footprints.
Understanding the distinct chemical and thermal profiles of paraffin and AKD waxes is essential to designing an optimized cooling and solidification system.
Paraffin wax typically possesses a melting point range between 46°C and 68°C. During the solidification phase, it releases a significant amount of latent heat of crystallization. If the cooling rate is poorly managed, the wax may crack, develop internal voids, or fail to release cleanly from the cooling surface.
A cost-effective cooling solution utilizes a stainless steel belt cooler equipped with zoned temperature control. In the initial zone, controlled cooling initiates nucleation. In the secondary zone, rapid cooling solidifies the bulk of the wax. In the final zone, temperature stabilization ensures the wax pastilles or flakes are sufficiently cooled below their glass transition temperature, preventing deformation or sticking during packaging.
Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) wax presents a different set of challenges. With a melting point around 48°C to 52°C, AKD wax is highly temperature-sensitive and exhibits a relatively long sticky phase during crystallization. If cooled too slowly, it remains tacky, adhering to the equipment and causing blockages. If cooled too rapidly with sub-zero media, condensation can occur, compromising product purity.
Our specialized AKD cooling systems employ a combination of chilled water spraying underneath the steel belt and dry, dehumidified air circulation above the belt. This dual-action heat removal accelerates crystallization without introducing moisture, yielding clean, non-sticky pastilles ready for immediate bagging.
The core of a cost-effective cooling solution lies in the thermodynamic efficiency of the steel belt heat exchanger. Our systems utilize high-tensile stainless steel belts with exceptional thermal conductivity. This allows for rapid, indirect heat transfer from the product to the cooling water sprayed underneath the belt.
The cooling water never contacts the wax. This prevents contamination of the product and allows the cooling water to be recirculated continuously through a closed-loop chiller, minimizing water consumption.
Our proprietary dropformer deposits molten wax droplets onto the moving steel belt with extreme precision. The droplet size and spacing are optimized to ensure maximum cooling rates and uniform pastille dimensions.
Equipped with advanced VFDs, the system automatically adjusts the belt speed and feed rate based on real-time temperature feedback, guaranteeing optimal solidification regardless of ambient conditions.
