Learn MoreGlobally, the infrastructure development and road construction industries are undergoing a massive transition toward sustainability, energy efficiency, and simplified logistics. Traditionally, bitumen and asphalt have been transported and stored in a molten, liquid state. This method requires continuous heating, consuming enormous amounts of fossil fuels and generating substantial greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain. Furthermore, transporting liquid bitumen over long distances via specialized tankers poses severe safety hazards and environmental risks in the event of spills.
To address these challenges, the industrial demand for solid bitumen pellets has skyrocketed. The Melt Granulation System has emerged as the definitive technological solution to convert liquid bitumen into stable, free-flowing solid pellets. By solidifying asphalt at the production source, manufacturers can package, store, and transport the material at ambient temperatures using standard logistics networks, such as bulk bags, containers, or dry bulk carriers. This paradigm shift dramatically reduces carbon footprints, eliminates the need for continuous heating, and unlocks new global export markets for bitumen producers.
The core of the continuous bitumen and asphalt pelletization process lies in the seamless integration of a high-performance melt feed system, droplet generation technology, and a continuous steel belt cooler. Liquid bitumen, maintained at its optimal flow temperature, is pumped into a specialized dropformer. The dropformer distributes precise droplets of molten asphalt across the width of a continuously moving, high-tensile stainless steel belt.
Achieving uniform asphalt pellets requires precise synchronization between the viscosity of the molten feed, the rotational speed of the dropformer, and the cooling rate of the steel belt. Advanced thermal zones control the temperature profile, ensuring the asphalt drops solidify cleanly without sticking to the belt or fracturing upon discharge.
As the steel belt moves forward, cooling water is sprayed onto the underside of the belt. The high thermal conductivity of the steel ensures rapid heat transfer from the asphalt droplets to the cooling water, without any direct contact between the water and the product. This continuous indirect cooling solidifies the asphalt droplets into uniform, hemispherically shaped pellets. At the discharge end of the system, the solidified pellets release cleanly from the belt surface, ready for packaging, bulk storage, or direct blending. This continuous process guarantees high throughput, minimal dust generation, and consistent product quality.
The versatility of the Melt Granulation System makes it indispensable across various high-value industrial applications. Below are the primary scenarios where solid asphalt pelletization delivers unmatched advantages:
Polymer-modified bitumen, widely used for high-performance highway pavements, requires precise formulation and is highly susceptible to thermal degradation if kept hot for extended periods. Pelletizing PMB immediately after synthesis locks in the polymer network structure. Road builders can melt the pellets on-site, ensuring the modified properties remain fully intact without degradation during transit.
For construction sites located in remote, mountainous, or island regions, transporting liquid bitumen tankers is logistically unfeasible. Solid asphalt pellets can be transported in standard weather-proof bags and melted on-demand at the asphalt mixing plant. This eliminates the risk of premature cooling of liquid tankers and ensures uninterrupted project timelines.
Manufacturers of roofing shingles and waterproofing membranes utilize specialized asphalt blends with high mineral filler content. The continuous melt granulation system allows for the dust-free handling of these highly viscous compounds, turning them into easy-to-dose pellets that improve blending efficiency in downstream manufacturing plants.
Solid additives and asphalt modifiers are increasingly dosed in pellet form. The precise droplet size control of our steel belt pastillators ensures that additive-rich asphalt pellets melt rapidly and disperse uniformly when introduced into the pugmill of an asphalt mixing plant, reducing mixing time and energy consumption.
Steel belt pastillator technology originated in Europe during the 1980s and entered the Chinese market in the late 1990s. Initially, due to its high cost, only a handful of large enterprises purchased and utilised it. To break the monopoly of foreign equipment, we commenced independent research and development of steel belt condensation pastillator as early as 2000.
Steel belt pastillator are primarily applied across multiple sectors including petrochemicals, daily chemical products, fine chemicals, and agricultural fertilizers.
